One Car or Two?

With moving back to the states, Ryan and I will have some big purchasing decisions ahead of us.  Part of the package over here is that Ryan's company pays for our car, car maintenance, insurance and gas (so long as we gas up in Belgium).  That means that for the last 4 years I haven't had to think about it at all.  We only have one car and Ryan normally takes it to work.  I am able to walk or take public transit to most places (and if not, I can drop Ryan off at work and have a car for the day).  We have 3 grocery stores within walking distance (no more than half mile from our place) which is my primary destination with our midget refrigerator.

The point of this is that we have been just fine with 1 car for the last 7 years (we sold my car when we got married).  I'm not saying it's not convenient to have 2 cars, but I don't feel like we need it.  As we were discussing this last night, Ryan brought up that when Log was coming home from his mission in Spain, he told my parents he didn't need a car since he was fine walking everywhere as he'd done the last 2 years of his life.  I kindly informed my parents that he didn't know what he was talking about and that he'd want it when he got back into the US life.  It's funny to think this is me now.  I am very excited for the conveniences we have in the States, but at the same time one of the best things I've learned here is that while it's nice, it is not something you really need.

So 1 car or 2?  I feel like once we go to 2 cars it would be very difficult to go back to 1.  We know eventually we'll want 2 but haven't decided on our timeline.  Since we don't know our timeline, it makes it more difficult to solidify which vehicle to buy first.  As of now are thinking a Honda Odyssey EX and a commuter car such as a Toyota Camry or similar.  In addition, between the two of us, we know squat about cars and I'm don't think either of us has a desire to learn more in that area.  We'll see how this all goes.

maybe start with one and once you get out of temporary housing and know where you're actually going to live you can reevaluate how walkable/public transit friendly your area is. We have 2 cars--not really a need, but it's been pretty convenient.

Brett and I have only had 1 car for our married lives as well, but with him in school and working, I am starting to feel pretty stir crazy and stranded. I could technically walk a lot of places, but it's cold, I don't have all the right equipment for the kids, it's hard enough to run multiple errands with a car and two kids, so I am VERY ready to get our second car. If Ryan works somewhere close and you could take him to work each day and pick him up, that might be an option to only have one, but I think with kids and a husband with a soon to be crazy busy season, you will really want to have your own car. Not a need per se, but a definitely necessary convenience if you don't want to go crazy with kids in the house and the inability to go grab things you need during the day because you have no transportation. The states are really missing the boat on public transportation availability. But that's just my two cents... :) I can't believe it's been four years. I am so disappointed in myself! Maybe we can plan a visit to Europe together sometime...
